Port Melbourne Victorian Terrace
ODD Architects

Wurundjeri Country / Town Planning Submitted - May 2025

Located in Port Melbourne, this project transforms a Victorian-era terrace into a practical family home that balances heritage and contemporary design. One of four brick cottages, the original building has been carefully retained and extended with a new two-storey addition at the rear.

The front part of the house, including its hipped roof, chimneys, and verandah, remains largely unchanged. Restoration works repaired and reinstated lost details like the verandah frieze, lime render, and front fence. The new addition, set back over 11 metres, is designed as a simple, modern volume in pale brick with brown metal-framed windows, contrasting with the original structure while referencing it through subtle brick detailing.

Inside, the layout has been updated for modern living. The ground floor opens to the rear garden with large windows and improved natural light. Skylights bring brightness into the deeper parts of the home, softening the typical terrace layout. The upper level has smaller, well-placed windows that provide light and privacy. A roof deck is hidden within the original roofline, offering outdoor space without changing the home's external appearance.

This project respects the character of the original home without copying it. The new addition is clearly contemporary but sits quietly behind the historic structure, creating a thoughtful blend of old and new.
