Port Melbourne House reimagines a double-fronted Victorian dwelling through a considered series of alterations and additions.
The original c.1880s home is retained and restored, with a new two-storey addition positioned quietly behind the existing roofline. A clear distinction between old and new allows the Victorian dwelling to remain the primary presence of the site, while creating generous spaces for contemporary family life.
The addition is conceived as a simple rectilinear form, expressed through a restrained palette of light brickwork and metal-framed windows. Drawing subtly from the material character of the surrounding cottages without replicating them, the new work forms a quiet contemporary backdrop to the original home.
