A considered alteration and addition to an 1886 Victorian Italianate residence in Hawthorn.
The project retains and restores the original home while removing later additions to make way for a new series of spaces to the rear. Conceived as a quiet counterpoint to the richly detailed Victorian architecture, the addition accommodates a new entry, gym, garage and outdoor living spaces while remaining deliberately secondary to the original house.
A restrained palette of masonry, steel and glass establishes a clear distinction between old and new. Low in form and carefully positioned within the garden, the new work extends the life of the historic residence while allowing the scale, detail and presence to remain.
